"I don't really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don't do it. Instead, I do what I hate." (Romans 7:15, NASB20).
How does psychology help us to do what is right? By facilitating an understanding and compassion towards the parts of us that are engaging in behaviors, or feeling feelings that keep us separate from the good path we want to be on, these immature parts of us can be transformed through a "change of mind" (metanoo in Greek = repentance). Internal Family Systems facilitates the client's awareness of beliefs, fears and hopes that sometimes started very young and are clouding the ability to follow God in the present. After awareness there is an engagement with these young defensive parts that helps them to mature with healed feelings and adaptive behaviors that allow for the leading of the Spirit in the Christian life.
